There are five types of aphasia which all affect a patient's ability to understand, read or speak words. Expressive Aphasia is one of these variants. Aphasia is caused by damage to the brain. There are several known causes but the most common trigger is usually a stroke. Studies have shown that up to 40% of stroke survivors suffer from Aphasia.

This type of aphasia is also known as non-fluent or expressive aphasia. Patients have difficulty producing grammatical sentences and their speech is limited mainly to short utterances of less than four words. Producing the right sounds or finding the right words is often a laborious process.
